Clowns and jesters were employed to tell jokes and provide entertainment, typically by a European Monarch, back in the middle ages. They wore brightly coloured clothes and peculiar hats. Their hats were distinctive with three floppy points that had bells on the ends. The three points represented donkey ears and tail that were worn by jesters in earlier times. The tradition of court jesters came to an end in Britain when Charles 1 was overthrown in the English civil war
