Chip shops, or “chippies”, are so integral to Britain’s food culture that in England alone they outnumber McDonald’s 8 to 1. It is noted that the very first recognized chip shop was opened back in the mid 1800’s in Oldham, Lancashire; denoted by an official historical marker. Cod is the fish of choice in England, with haddock standing in as a close second. Fish & Chips are traditionally served wrapped in newspaper with salt and vinegar, but newspaper wrapping was deemed unhealthy in 1971 by the EU.
